Behavior Based Interviews – Tips

Behavior Based Interviews – Tips Behavior based interviews are used to predict future performance, in many situations past experience and how you have delta with similar situations will help employees be successful in the new role. Behavioral interviewing, in fact, is said to be 55 percent predictive of future on-the-job behavior, while traditional interviewing is only 10 percent predictive. Obviously recruiting has evolved many folds that very rarely multinationals conduct interviews in a traditional format. What to keep in mind while attending interviews ? STAR approach (S –Situation, T -Task, A- Action, R- Results) Answering Questions: Its suggested that you keep the STAR approach in mind and answer questions with relevant examples, answers got to be short with right examples. If you have not done anything pertaining to the question, it’s good to be honest and say so rather than beating around the bush. Results can be negative, not every task we take on has a significant positive impact. Every interviewer understands this, don’t forget, the interviewer has similar experience or has grown to be a hiring manager due to experience and leadership. All that he/she is looking for is the thought process, how well you understand the process and what can you do differently or have done differently. Ground Work: Its crucial, you research on the company, role, interviewers profile, stock price etc. Without ground work, not everyone could ace the interview. What questions to ask : After you research, I’m sure there are many questions which comes to mind, write down one by one. After you are done with the interview, ask the questions. When you ask the right questions, its evident that you are serious about this role. Reason to move: Try to avoid the answer looking for a bigger role OR more challenge etc. This is very old fashion. Out of 100 interviews 90 of them have the same reason J, I will have to go back to the research part, after intense research you must be attracted to the role for a reason. Try to explain what attracts you, such as product, regional people management, new project etc. Remember, being different and unique signifies your success. First impression is the best impression, dress appropriately, give a firm handshake, keep eye contact. Do not interrupt the interviewer when he is talking , ability to listen is an important attribute. After the interview, send a thank you note. Being nice without expectation is being human.
